New Year's Resolutions: Resolutions to Bring a Happy New Year

This New Year, don't just make another lame New Year's Resolution that fades by February. Make a New Year's Resolution that promises not just a new year, but a new life.

New Report Shows You Step-By-Step How To Keep Every Resolution Well Beyond New Year's Day...Making You Happier, Wealthier And Fitter Than You Ever Thought Possible!

A Quick Story - December 31 1969

I was 7 years old and my older sister, Marilyn, was 16. Marilyn asked me if I was going to make any New Years Resolutions.

"What's a New Year Resolution?"

"It's where you decide to change something, make a good habit or break a bad habit. You know, something you're going to do better in the New Year." I guess she could see I didn't get it, because she went on, "Like you might make a New Year's Resolution to make your bed every day. And I might make a New Year's Resolution to stop swearing."

I snorted with laughter. Marilyn didn't swear a lot, but I knew her curses came like knee-jerk reactions, without thought. Only our father's presence seemed to help her hold her tongue.

"What's so funny?" she asked. "You don't think I can stop swearing? I bet I can not swear a lot longer than you can make your bed every morning."

"Okay. Bet."

The next morning I remembered my true goal of besting my big sister and made my bed before going downstairs for breakfast. I did this for the next 3 days. On the third day Marilyn, a very new driver, drove me and my brother to the mall. When we went to leave, the car wouldn't start and Marilyn took the Lord's name in vain. Obviously a breach of her no-swearing resolution. In case she missed this fact, I decided to continue making my bed. On the fourth day, Marilyn was trying to make a box of brownies in record time when she knocked over the vegetable oil. A string of oaths came out of her mouth and our eyes met. She knew I'd won.

Having achieved my goal, I no longer made my bed in the mornings, thereby falling into the most common pattern for New Year's Resolutions of making them on December 31st and promptly returning to old habits.

So why did my first New Year's Resolution fail, as so many do? I lacked the proper motivation and reinforcement. This year I'm doing something completely different

In 2008, I'm resolving to have a Happy New Year. This does NOT mean I will simply be happy with whatever the year brings. No, I am resolving to create a year that makes me very happy. Unlike making my bed each morning, what I'm resolving this year will bring me happiness and satisfaction. The reason New Year's Resolutions fail is you need to be motivated and you need to understand how to modify your habits to reinforce your desire and efforts.
